10 Tips For a Great Newborn Session | Minnesota Newborn Photographer

Congratulations! Chances are, you’re here because you’ve recently welcomed, or are about to welcome a brand-new little addition into your life! Scheduling newborn photos is such an exciting step, but I know it can also feel overwhelming when you’re running on little sleep and adjusting to life with a baby. The good news? Preparing doesn’t have to be stressful! Whether you’re coming to my cozy Stillwater, MN studio or I’m photographing you in the comfort of your home, these tips will help you feel calmer, a little more prepared, and ready to enjoy a beautiful, relaxed newborn session.

As a mom of two little ones under three, I know firsthand how hard it can be just to get out the door. Let alone while running on almost no sleep, juggling a newborn, and dealing with blowouts or surprise spit-up. It’s a lot.

As a photographer, my goal is always to make life easier for my clients during this special (and often chaotic) season.

And let’s be honest - sh*t happens. Babies cry, diapers leak, plans change. Nothing has to be perfect for your newborn session to be beautiful, and that’s exactly the way it should be.

That’s why I’ve put together my top 10 tips for making your newborn photo session as smooth and stress-free as possible. Whether we’re meeting in my Stillwater, MN studio or capturing those first days in your home, these simple steps will help you feel prepared, relaxed, and ready to enjoy every moment.

10 Tips for a Great Newborn Photo Session

1. Pack Bags and Clothes the Night Before
Prepare extra outfits for everyone… yes I mean everyone — parents, siblings, and baby. Your photographer might provide outfits for baby (I do), but I would bring extras just incase. Be prepared for any surprise spills or spit-ups. Having everything packed and ready the night before will help your morning feel less hectic.

2. Bring Water and Snacks
Sessions can take some time, and a hungry parent or toddler isn’t fun for anyone. The space also gets pretty warm, so staying hydrated is key. Pack your favorite beverages and snacks so you stay energized and comfortable throughout the shoot.

3. Trust Your Photographer
You don’t need to worry about posing or calming the baby — that’s my job. Relax and let me guide the session so you can

4. Feed Baby Right Before the Session
I ask all my mamas to do a full feed about 20 - 30 minutes before a session. A full tummy usually means a sleepy, content baby. There is always room to do another feed or “top off” during the session as well.

5. Keep the Room Warm (I know, sorry)
Pack your layers! A warm baby is [usually] a happy baby. If I am shooting at your home, set your thermostat to around 73–75°F. A cozy environment helps baby stay comfortable and relaxed.

6. Don’t Stress About Baby’s Mood
It’s totally normal for babies to fuss, need diaper changes, or take breaks. We follow baby’s lead, so no worries if things don’t go exactly as planned.

7. Tidy Up with Help
Ask your partner or a friend to help quickly declutter the main photo areas. Don’t worry about perfection — a simple, clean space lets your family and baby shine.

8. Plan to Arrive Early
If you’re coming to the studio, try to arrive a little early so you can settle in, feed baby, and take a few deep breaths before we start.

9. Communicate Beforehand
